The application could be argued to represent a field change in terms of the rigour with which the analysis is required to be done. It certainly offered a new challenge to Keith Miller and Tony Rhodes as their solution was to pioneer the use of cell-line material for the external quality assessment of the marker [4], closely mirroring the cell-line internal quality control which is present in the Dako HercepTestTM Kit. For many clinical histopathology laboratories, fluorescent in- situ hybridisation (FISH) became an important mainstream diagnostic technique as a result of its presence in the HER-2 testing algorithm [5, 6]. UK NEQAS-ICC extended its scope to include this technique when it introduced a FISH Module in 2004. The Scheme was fortunate to be able to appoint Dr. John Bartlett to oversee this important new venture. Consequently, there was a change to the Schemes name when it became UK NEQAS-ICC & FISH very recently in recognition of the increasing importance of non-fluorescent labels, e.g. chromogenic labels and silver labels. The Scheme has been renamed since to UK NEQAS-ICC & ISH. A significant change in personnel came in 2004 with the appointment of Dr. Merdol Ibrahim to manage the Scheme (Tony Rhodes having left some time earlier to pursue a career in academia). As well as being a highly capable administrator, Merdol is a great communicator - as anyone who has met him or has heard him speak at conferences will testify to. He also possesses excellent information technology skills which he has been able to bring to bear in updating the UK NEQAS external interface with participants (a web-based platform for data entry by participants about methods and reagents used), and behind the scenes in gathering and collecting assessment results. This means that things are a lot more `slick now, data collection far more robust, and access to results more user-friendly with participants being able to download their individual assessment reports as soon as the results are available. How assessments are conducted Assessments take place centrally, usually at UK NEQAS-ICC & ISH headquarters in London, and within the ICC branch of the Scheme, they all have a broadly similar format. (FISH assessments differ as participants assess their own slides and return the copy number/ratio obtained for comparison to UK NEQAS generated standard results).
